Pioneers in Community Healthcare
Rooted in the rich legacy of Nirvana Healthcare Management Services, North Ward Behavioral Health Center has a long-standing tradition of offering patient-centric care to the residents of Essex County. Since its inception in 2001 under Salerno Medical Associates, our primary objective has been to continually expand and adapt our services to cater to the evolving healthcare needs of our community.
In 2002, Dr. Alexander G. Salerno breathed new life into the house-call program initiated by his father, Dr. Alphonse Salerno, by launching the Senior Healthcare Outreach Program (SHOP). This initiative later evolved into the Community Healthcare Outreach Program (CHOP Health), expanding its scope to support individuals grappling with mental health concerns. Further, in 2010, Dr. Salerno established the Urban Healthcare Initiative Program (UHIP) to bridge the gap in healthcare outcomes for patients in urban communities.
To enhance our primary care services, we opened Metropolitan Medical Group in 2014. Dr. Salerno joined hands with his father-in-law, Dr. Raouf Elias, to provide comprehensive care at Roseville Medical Society. Upon Dr. Elias’s passing in 2016, Dr. Salerno and a dedicated team of physicians continued to honor his legacy by maintaining high standards of care.
In 2021, North Ward Medical Arts was founded along with several specialty practices, including Newark Vein and Vascular Center and Prospect Spine and Pain, to deliver much-needed care services in areas traditionally underserved in Newark. These initiatives marked a return to the communities where Dr. Svetlana Salerno first began serving patients.
In line with our commitment to continually enhance patient care, Nirvana Healthcare Management Services added the Department of Population Health in 2022. This development allows us to respond more effectively to the diverse healthcare needs of the communities in Essex County, NJ. Further, the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) awarded Nirvana Healthcare Management Services a $500,000 grant, making us the only medical practice in the area to receive such funding. This grant will enable us to expand our primary and specialty services further, fostering better health and wellness throughout East Orange and Newark, NJ.
